Bulbous Tip Nose Surgery: What to Know about this Specific Rhinoplasty

Since your nose is one of the most prominent features of your face, you naturally want it to be proportionate to your other features. If you have what’s commonly called a bulbous nose, it can be resized or reshaped with a plastic surgery procedure known as a rhinoplasty.

During rhinoplasty, a nose with a round, wide tip is contoured to create a less prominent, more shapely appearance.

What Is Bulbous Tip Nose Surgery?

A bulbous tip can be caused by a number of things, such as poorly defined hypertrophic lower lateral cartilages, a round dome shape, heavy soft-tissue coverage or poor cartilage strength. Facial plastic surgery is one of the most sophisticated and delicate aesthetic procedures. Contemporary rhinoplasty techniques allow the bulbous tip to be refined without compromising the underlying nasal structure. Smaller cartilage edges are refined and reconfigured, along with suturing techniques to create a sharper, more natural nasal tip. For thicker skinned patients, thinning of the skin in the area may be necessary to ensure a stable long-term functional and aesthetic result.

The result is a nose that is more proportional in size and width, so the bridge blends and smoothly transitions to the nasal tip. These changes to the nose can help highlight the patient’s other facial features.

What Are the Benefits of Bulbous Tip Nose Surgery?

There are a number of reasons to consider rhinoplasty. Chief among them is enhancing your appearance, which can boost your confidence and self-esteem. There are other benefits that affect your health, such as improving your breathing, alleviating sinus problems and providing a permanent solution to snoring.

Surgeons stress that the procedure is all about creating symmetry and balance on your face. Therefore, you may not be able to obtain the exact nose profile of a celebrity you admire. It’s important to listen to the doctor’s advice about what is possible and what will look best on you. The decision to have the surgery should not be made on a whim, and it should be your decision. Don’t let someone talk you into it if you’re not fully comfortable with having it done.

Bulbous Tip Nose Surgery FAQs:

How long is the surgery?

Generally about 2 to 2 ½ hours.

Is there anesthesia?

Yes, a rhinoplasty requires general anesthesia to ensure the comfort of the patient.

Are there different types of rhinoplasty?

Yes, there are two main types, open and closed. The open procedure is performed with a small incision across the column of skin between your nostrils. The closed procedure is done with all incisions made inside the nose. A closed rhinoplasty could be performed for the removal of a hump on the upper portion of the nose, while an open rhinoplasty would be for more significant work done on the tip of the nose.

What is the recovery time?

The initial recovery period lasts approximately 1½ to 2 weeks. To be safe, count on being off work for at least 10 days. There will be some discomfort, including swelling and tenderness. During this time, you should rest with your head elevated as much as possible. The cast and stitches will be removed a little after a week and taping will be removed a few days after that. While most of the swelling will subside in the first three months after surgery, it may take up to a year for your nose to fully settle into its new look. You can expect swelling to subside by 20 to 30 percent three weeks after the procedure, by 50 to 60 percent in six weeks and by 90 percent in three months. The tip usually takes the longest to heal.

What about returning to my normal activities?

You can drive in five to seven days after surgery. You can participate in non-contact activities such as swimming, jogging, and hiking within three to four weeks. For more strenuous sports such as football, basketball, skiing, and tennis, you should be back in action by six weeks after surgery.

What is the success rate?

Better than 95 percent. It is one of the most popular plastic surgeries.
